The time displayed on the wall said twelve forty-five. Atlas undressed and climbed under the sheets of their bed, Abi pulled her shirt off and flung it over to the corner, then she unbuttoned her bra and allowed it to drop to the floor. “Get me some wine,” commanded Abi.

Atlas dutifully came back from the Fuco with two glasses of synthetic wine. She snatched them from his grasp, leaned over Atlas to place one glass on the windowsill and then brushed his arm, smiling. Her smile dropped and she sipped her drink rigidly. Atlas placed a hand onto her side and another came up to play with her hair. He leaned in for a kiss but she ignored him.

“You are the most precious resource in my world.” Atlas smiled close to her ear.

“I love you too,” sighed Abi. Atlas tried to take things further but Abi decided she just wanted to sleep.

Atlas was drinking wine quietly while watching the news next to a sleeping Abi and her empty glass of wine. “The time is coming up to two am, time for a roundup of the headlines,” The newswoman stood in front of her desk, with a bald head, and a smart grey dress. “Riots in Newmerica sparked by a terrorist militia, cause new fears of increased terrorism in the region. The Raipur civic has announced a new strategy to tackle street gangs. Also, Fuco announces the removal of all preservatives from its premium food components and a free trial. Suicides may be linked to spending too much time in virtual reality and not enough in work. The Arcadia Science Institute also announces a new sibling company for developing space travel. But first we go over to Tim Boston with his report from Newmerica.”

The news feed showed video of a burning warehouse with the Newmerica Repo Enterprise logo. “Just hours ago today an organised terrorist unit in Oakland, firebombed this peaceful shopping district. The murderous group, hell-bent on destroying lives in this local area, set ablaze the historic warehouse of Newmerica Enterprise after breaking in to steal weapons used for debt collection utilities.”

The image switched to show piles of bodies. “After the infamous Long Beach civic massacre seven years ago, and similar robberies since, it appears this is the trademark of a militia targeting the debt collection industry in this region. Local police forces are telling us they have new leads on the whereabouts of these rioters.”

The picture changed to show a civic poly chief speaking to a camera from the safety of his office. “These kinds of malicious acts will be avenged professionally in any civic the aggressors are hiding. Aggression in our time has risen dramatically, and I believe it is because people have forgotten the way of our ancestors. Everyone has a right to success by birth.
